The end of Google? Distributed Search Engine Technology set to take over.....
So Im sure we can all agree that Google has become THE KING of the internet over the past 5 years or more.But this could be set to change....sooner than we think and regardless of if Microsoft buys Yahoo!!
We are talking about handing the power of the web over into the hands of you and me?!! Yes, thats right....Majestic-12 is developing a search engine scalable to billions of web pages that is based on support by the online community. Since the job of creating a world wide web search engine is so huge, the idea of Majestic-12 Distributed Search Engine is based on the concept of distributed computing.
The principle idea being that many machines work on one task to get it done quicker than one large machine alone. One of the biggest challenges with the search engine was actually getting the billions of pages that exist on the www indexed, and to do this cost effectively a client software called MJ12node was created that can be run on otherwise idle computers. This concept was used successfully by projects like SETI@HOME and distributed.net and has matured over the past few years into an 'accepted medium'.
The MJ12node software combines machines from all around the globe to crawl, collate and then send back their findings to the master server. The crawled data will be analysed (indexed) and added to the Majestic-12 search engine. The result? Hopefully the biggest crawl of the web, and perhaps even the most up to date search engine of it's time.
The beauty behind this idea is that we can all contribute!
